MODUS: Modelling Urban Space
Operation coordinated by P. Frankhauser, C. Tannier and I. Thomas, in the frame of the European Research Group S4
MODUS is a platform for scientific discussion in urban research inciting different disciplines to cooperate in an open-minded way. The main topics considered are modelling urban structures as well as the underlying socio-economic processes which generate them. The goal is on the one hand to strengthen the theoretical background of urban modelling by conceiving and clarifying epistemological and formal concepts, and to contribute on the other hand to improving and developing tools for decision support in urban planning.
The MODUS-workshops shall illustrate by means of different, complementary contributions the state of the art in urban modelling. They give the opportunity to stimulate a debate on the performance of the different approaches as well as on their potential links, but also to identify their lacks in order to reflect about further research. It is intended to create Modus working groups for different topics in order to deepen the exchanges and to encourage common scientific production.
2006, 1st WORKSHOP: About the emergence of complex forms and multi-scale patterns
2007, 2nd WORKSHOP: measuring urban forms and evolution - revealing both the socio-economic processes and design issues that shape urban forms
2009, 3rd WORKSHOP: Multi-scale interactions between urban forms and processes (mobilities, accessibilities): how to model sustainable spatial structures?
